Research Methods: Descriptive Methods & Qualitative Experiments

Human factors involve the study of human behaviors within context rather than purely in a lab. To best capture these multi-facet behaviors, especially when interacting with computer interfaces, more than one data collection/analysis method is often necessary. This presentation describes some well-established descriptive methods and the relatively new concept of qualitative experiment. The objective is to provide human factors/usability students a toolkit to draw on when designing their projects or theses.

The second portion of this presentation will discuss techniques in presenting research findings to the research community and businesses. It will center on the visual effects of such presentations. Participating students will engage in an exercise of preparing some visual presentations.

Designing Interfaces for Older Adults and Children

Designing interfaces for older adults and children requires an understanding of the physiological and cognitive abilities of these two populations. For instance, considerations of older adults’ age-related changes such as sensory/perceptual processes, motor abilities, and cognitive processes, and children’s developmental stages are critical in developing user-friendly systems. This presentation will highlight some of older adults’ functional challenges and children’s developmental stages in terms of designing interfaces and instructional materials. It will conclude with the role of children in user testing protocols and research methods in conducting usability research with children.

Visual Design Principles: Usable Interfaces and Displays

What makes a good design? What are issues of consideration when evaluating or designing visual displays and interfaces? How can visual representations help to convey information effectively? This presentation will answer these questions by providing some cognitive design principles. Critics of websites, images, and student projects will further demonstrate the relevance of these basic principles to real world designs.
