题目:Personal Information Management (PIM)

内容摘要:

Information studies researchers have traditionally focused on institutional information management in libraries and web sites. Recently, researchers have come to recognize that a neglected area of research is studying how individuals extract and manage personal information stores from both traditional sources and the newer information technologies. Research is focused on both understanding and improving strategies: how you find, create, store, organize, maintain, retrieve and distribute information needed to perform tasks and fulfill responsibilities; and how to improve supporting technology. This talk will provide an overview of PIM and a sample of the research projects undertaken.

题目:Interdisciplinary research and education: why it is important but difficult to achieve?

内容摘要:

Modern enterprises are increasingly complex in their operations. They do not just require specialists, they require specialists who can work together collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams. For example, creating great software products requires not only computer scientists; it requires good business people, good writers (for documentation), good designers (for graphics) and good usability specialists (who call on knowledge from psychology). The big problems of the world (climate change, energy, food, poverty, disease and pandemics) are such than no one specialization can produce a solution on its own. Universities are increasingly recognizing the need to both prepare students for the collaborative work environment and the need to bring together researchers into teams of diverse expertise. This talk will consider the need for interdisciplinary work in universities, the barriers to it and how the barriers may be overcome.

题目:Rich Internet Applications (RIA)

内容摘要:

In less than 20 years the world-wide web has developed rapidly from a collection of static text-based pages to a place where people go to interact with sophisticated applications that allow us to work, collaborate, shop, share and play. The interactivity of applications on the web is beginning to rival what is found on the desktop. These are often referred to as Rich Internet Applications (RIA), as they contain interactive graphics, rather than simple text and link type interfaces. We will look at some of these applications and the associated concepts (e.g. Web 2.0), and introduce some of the tools that make rapid development of these applications possible.
